1. What makes good podiatry instruments?

Before we get into the assortments, briefly the most important criteria:

  • Material: stainless, hardened steel, autoclavable
  • Ergonomics: grippy surfaces, sensible spring action, suitable sizes
  • Grind & finish: cleanly ground blades without burrs, precise tips
  • Hygiene: smooth surfaces, easy to clean, suitable for washer-disinfector and autoclave

Brands such as RUCK have stood for proven quality in podiatry for years. Through nagelzange.de you get these premium instruments – and in addition the value-conscious brand Excellent Solingen, with which you can supplement your assortment economically.

2. Basic assortment – the minimum for a safe start

RUCK nail nipper for the podiatry practice

Ideal for newcomers to the profession and for training, for mobile foot care and for small practices with basic services.

A) Nail work

1–2 nail nippers or head cutters (e.g. curved, 14–16 cm)

Here a basic nail nipper with a single or double spring is particularly suitable (item no. 1005 and 1001) as well as a lever-action nipper for thicker nails (Excellent lever-action nipper, item 3009 or RUCK nail nipper with double lever action).

Among the head cutters we carry several shapes, including the 2000 series by Excellent Solingen as well as the Dreiturm jointed nipper, the RUCK head cutter and the Erbe Solingen head cutter. You will find an overview in the head cutters category.

1 corner nipper for ingrown or hard-to-reach parts of the nail

Corner nippers go where a normal nipper can no longer grip. We carry them tower-pointed (Excellent corner nipper tower-pointed), extra-pointed (Excellent corner nipper extra-pointed, RUCK trapeze corner nipper), compact and pointed (RUCK corner nipper 13 cm compact/pointed) and with a curved blade (Excellent corner nipper curved, RUCK corner nail nipper curved). All models: corner nippers.

1 cuticle scissors or cuticle nipper for excess cuticle

For cutting smaller bits of skin and the cuticle, either is suitable. The cuticle scissors come in various shapes – a pointed, slightly curved blade is recommended. Anyone who wants to work even more finely reaches for the spring cuticle scissors: the spring mechanism allows considerably more control.

For professional users, cuticle nippers are the better choice. They have very short blades with scissor-like handles and allow highly precise cuts – above all on the thin cuticle of the fingernails.

1–2 nail files (stainless steel or disposable files)

Disposable file sheets for the practice – consumables instead of reprocessing

With nail files, shape, material and grit differ:

  • Banana files – polishing the nail surface and lightly filing the edges
  • Buffing files – several polishing surfaces for the shine
  • Sapphire nail files – double-sided, for fine and coarse filing
  • Metal nail files – similar, but in finer grits and usually more robust
  • Emery boards – very fine disposable files for precise work
  • Glass nail files – for sensitive natural nails, no splintering, very fine grit

B) Callus & pressure points

1 scalpel handle (e.g. handle no. 3)

Scalpel handles are needed to remove larger areas of callus. The most common are no. 3 and no. 4 – the same sizes as in surgery.

Matching scalpel blades (e.g. size 10, 15 or 15C)

Scalpel blades are usually made of carbon steel and are sterile single-use blades. For the no. 3 and no. 4 handles we carry all the common sizes: scalpels and blades.

1 ring curette or small plane for corns and clavi

1 rasp or foot file for the smoothing finish – available from us with a metal or plastic handle.

C) Probes & auxiliary instruments

RUCK nail-fold knife made of stainless steel for the nail fold

1–2 double-ended instruments or probes (hook, spatula, excavator)

Double-ended instruments are indispensable in every practice: cuticle pushers, cuticle knives, nail cleaners, corner lifters, cotton hooks, probes, spatulas and packing tools. Usually one instrument carries two different working ends – that saves space in the tray and handle changes during the treatment.

1 pair of tweezers (anatomical, fine)

Tweezers come straight, slanted and angled, nickel-plated or stainless. You will find an overview under tweezers; for splinters and ingrown hairs, splinter tweezers are suitable.

1 nail elevator for getting under the nail plate – corner lifters are the classic instrument here for reaching the nail bed.

D) Hygiene & storage

  • instrument tray or basket
  • matching sterilisation pouches
  • disinfectant-resistant tray for used instruments

With this basic assortment you cover most standard treatments professionally: shortening nails, minor corrections, simple callus removal.

3. Extended assortment – for the established practice

Ideal for practices with a regular patient base and for treating at-risk feet. Here you supplement the basic set with more specialised shapes and duplicate versions, so that you can also work hygienically at a high throughput.
